Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in cats. Among other things, adiposity or genetic predisposition can be causes for this. With diabetes mellitus there is a chronic increase in the blood sugar level, because the production of the hormone insulin is disturbed and therefore the blood sugar level is no longer regulated. In that case, switching to other food is unavoidable. Royal Canin Veterinary Diet - Diabetic DS 46 offers a durable solution for cats over 6 months of age with diabetes mellitus. This food contains moderate energy content to reduce excess weight and maintain weight. The addition of flea seeds and barley can counteract postprandial hyperglycaemia. An increased protein content contributes positively to the reduction of the net energy loss, for a good, delayed glucose supply.

Indications:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Weight maintenance

Contraindications: pregnant & lactating cats - kittens

Specific product features: Moderate energy content: a reduced energy content promotes optimal fitness and can reduce insulin resistance in combination with obesity. High protein content: the increased protein content contributes to the reduction of the net energy decrease and it can provide a delayed glucose supply Glucose modulation: the action of flea seeds (psyllium) and the addition of grain products (barley) can prevent postprandial hyperglycaemia. Without monosaccharides. Protects the joints: chondroitin sulphate (inhibits the enzymatic damage of chondrozytes) and glucosamine (stimulates the new build-up of glycosamineoglycans) counteract degenerative joint diseases.

Duration of treatment: This diet food should be given for a lifetime. Although Diabetes Mellitus may be reversible in cats, this food can reduce the risk of relapse.

Extra information: Diet food with an adjusted amount of starch / a high protein content supports the clinical control and reduced insulin requirement, and increases the risk of reversibility of diabetes in cats (Rand 2009). A high protein content supports that the feed is not rejected much. This is important in cats with diabetes mellitus in order not to affect insulin delivery.
